We can also modify older am type radios to work on FM, have a ipod/mp3 input and improved amplification to drive modern high quality speakers. A step on from this is the facility to control a modern stereo from the original old style unit. The new unit can be hidden with the older unit fitted in the dash for the correct appearance.
Antennas are another problem. We can get over this by using either on glass aerials which are internally mounted or from time to time we have put aerials behind grills, bumpers etc for a discreet installation. These normally require a bit of experimentation to get the optimum position and trying some different aerials in different positions can highlight some big differences in performance.
Speaker fitting can present some challenges as there aren’t normally any factory positions or grills as in a modern car. We have various speakers with a “classic” looking grill from JL and Kenwood which have a chrome or silver ring around the bezel. Alternatively we regularly install a chrome metal grill very much in keeping with older cars again with a modern speaker behind. We have also made replacement panels and shelves trimmed in similar materials to the interior to save damaging the period trim which can be saved for originality.
If your car has got a grill speakers can be mounted behind for better performance.
Security systems can be awkward normally due to immobilisation issues. Components such as LEDs (the flashing light) can be fitted discreetly, proximity sensors can be hidden under carpet and trim to pick up interior movement without been seen and sirens can be hidden if necessary. The main problem on older cars is the lack of electronic ignition to disable for immobilisation. Cutting the lead to the coil on a car with points is easily defeated so we connect in a different way to get over this.
We also regularly fit tracking devices which by the nature of the product are covertly fitted. These can be a problem to hide on some cars as a lot of classics have exposed dashboards and not many suitable locations. But again we’ve made panels when required in keeping with the car to hide trackers, alarm control units etc.
